Position: Instructor (Part-Time/Full-Time) - Film & Television/Mass Communications/Interactive Media Arts Division

Founded in 1972, Five Towns College is a private, coeducational, non-sectarian institution of higher education. The College serves the cause of music, media, and the performing arts. Five Towns College offers associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral degree programs in eight major areas of study. The most popular degree programs include music, film/video, theatre arts, business management, and mass communication. Programs of study begin twice each year in the fall and spring following a traditional academic semester calendar. Summer, winter, evening, and part-time learning opportunities are also offered. The College delivers classes in traditional, hybrid and blended formats.
The College holds an Absolute Charter granted by the New York State Board of Regents, and its programs of study are registered with the New York State Education Department. Five Towns College is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The College also holds programmatic accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). Its Business Division is a candidate for accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Job Description: Five Towns College, a leader in higher education for creative and performing arts, is seeking passionate, experienced, and innovative instructors to join our Film and Television, Mass Communications, or Interactive Media Arts Divisions. The ideal candidate will bring a rich blend of practical industry experience in their respective field and academic insight to foster the next generation of film, communications, and interactive media arts professionals.
Key Responsibilities (All Divisions):
- Teach up to 15 credits per semester.
- Perform administrative tasks utilizing the college's learning management system (LMS) related to course management, such as maintaining student records, submitting grades, and participating in program reviews and accreditation processes.
- Stay current with industry trends and technologies in specific areas of expertise, integrating them into the curriculum.
- Participate in departmental activities, including curriculum development, student advisement, and faculty committees.
- Guide students through hands-on projects, ensuring a balance between creative expression and technical skill.
- Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary projects and contribute to the vibrant community of the college.
- Build and maintain relationships with industry professionals, alumni, and organizations to facilitate networking opportunities, guest lectures, workshops, and collaborative projects for students.
Specific Responsibilities by Division:
Film:
- Develop an engaging curriculum in various aspects of film production, including directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and post-production.
- Mentor students in both theoretical and practical aspects of filmmaking, guiding them through practical hands-on exercises, productions, and senior projects.
- Represent the college and its film and television program at industry events, conferences, and festivals, enhancing the institution's visibility and connections.
- Must be familiar with cameras from Canon, Sony, RED, ARRI, and Blackmagic Design; lenses; audio; grip; a variety of LED lighting equipment; and software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve, Adobe SpeedGrade, Final Draft, Celtx, and budgeting and production management software.
Mass Communications:
- Develop and update an engaging curriculum in various aspects of communications, including entertainment and sports broadcasting, LIVE event production, visual radio/podcasting, and multimedia journalism production.
- Supervise and mentor students in the planning and execution of real-world projects, such as producing a live broadcast, creating a news report, and developing a multimedia journalism piece for social media.
- Teach a range of specialized courses in broadcasting, live event production, and multimedia journalism, incorporating hands-on training with industry-standard equipment and software for audio and video production, editing, and broadcasting.
- Stay current with technology and software used in broadcast, multimedia, and live event productions, such as production rundown (ENPS), video editing (Adobe Premiere), radio scheduling (G-Selector and Zeta), and social media (Hootsuite, Buffer, and Sprout Social) software.
Interactive Media Arts:
- Develop an engaging curriculum in various aspects of digital media arts, with a focus on interactive computer graphics, ensuring integration of current technologies, software, and practices. Develop course materials that cover essential skills in 3D modeling, computer animation, real-time graphics, user interface design, and virtual reality/production.
- Mentor students in developing their portfolios, capstone projects, or competitive entries for festivals and competitions related to interactive computer graphics and media arts.
- Teach courses, workshops, and practical sessions in interactive media arts, covering topics such as digital design, 3D computer animation, web development, game design, and virtual reality/production.
- Stay current with technology and software used in interactive media arts, such as equipment: Wacom Intuos or Cintiq graphic tablets, Oculus, HTC Vive, and Vision Pro headsets, 3D scanners, cameras, and printers; software: Unreal Engine, Adobe Creative Suite, Cinema 4D.
- Offer guidance on academic planning and career opportunities in the fields of game design, VR/AR development, graphic/web design, and computer animation.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Film, Media Arts, Communications, or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years' teaching experience at the college level is preferred.
- Extensive experience in the specific industry, with a portfolio of work to demonstrate expertise.
- Demonstrated ability in operating a wide range of production tools and software in one of the three specific areas.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to student success.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, dynamic academic environment.
