Your role
The Fifth Estate, one of Canada’s most impactful investigative documentary programs – which counts every major award in journalism among its honours – is looking for the next tenacious Associate Producer to join our team. The experienced, creative and diligent journalists at this program have been setting the news agenda and pushing for accountability for a landmark 50 seasons.
If you are able to see angles and find stories that no one else can, convince that ‘big get’ to come on camera, find the smoking gun buried in documents and defer to facts and public interest above all else, you belong here.
You are equally comfortable filing an access to information request or reading hundreds of pages of court documents as you are brainstorming visual treatments and contributing leads and story arcs.
You are known for your multitasking skills, your passion and your ability to get things done.
Your ability to use your deep-dive research skills to identify potential stories that warrant a one-hour documentary-style treatment, sets you apart. When it comes to translating research into storytelling, you know what is interesting, what is important and what is both. The only thing higher than your standard is your work ethic.
You are known for your ability to take initiative and generate ideas and work collaboratively with other high-performing journalists to deliver high quality investigative journalism formatted for video, audio and the written word. Your credits and bylines show you know how to take an investigation from pitch to publish.
The Fifth Estate’s production timelines vary from years down to days. You are comfortable and have demonstrated experience working on multiple files with varying needs and timelines.
You thrive in the fast-paced environment of a weekly national network program and be calmly able to face down challenges, whether they be logistics around gathering in the field, or the need to pivot quickly on a changing story.
Working under the direction and supervision of the Executive Producer, Senior Producer and episode producer, the successful candidate will be a proven journalist with exceptional critical thinking skills. You will demonstrate an understanding of investigative television journalism and the mandate of the show.
Along with your editorial strengths, communication skills, and exceptional creativity, you are a committed team player. Your track record shows that you have the confidence and judgment to know when to problem solve on your own and when to escalate. Your strong desire to improve every day means you internalize feedback and adapt to changes in both editorial and legal vets.
In covering a broad range of investigative stories, informing Canadians and enriching democratic life, we need to be as diverse in every way as the country we serve, both within our workforce and on air. As an employer, we value equal opportunity and nurture an inclusive workplace where our individual differences are not only recognized and valued, but also extend to and pervade all the services we provide as Canada's public broadcaster.
You have a strong understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices and you make sure all aspects of your work adhere to it. If you think your career path has prepared you for the opportunity and challenge to work at Canada’s investigative program of record, read on:
