The Detroit Free Press, through the Dow Jones News Fund internship program, is providing internship opportunities on our digital desk to focus on audience engagement and data journalism. We are seeking candidates who are energetic, curious and passionate about informing audiences and reaching untapped audiences with dynamic social posts and essential data. One intern position will focus on data journalism, tapping into a host of high-interest data. This intern will work closely with the Free Press' data reporter on data-driven projects including stories, analysis, visualizations, automation, social media and audio. A second intern position will focus on audience engagement mostly through social media and search engine optimization. Their job will be to share the stories of our community on social in ways that resonate with audiences. They'll work with the web team to manage the Free Press' branded social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube), This includes work with analytics, headline writing, graphic design, photo editing, AP Style and news curation. Both interns will be part of the Free Press’ award-winning digital desk, which has made the Free Press’ digital and social operations one that readers trust.
Compensation for a 37.5-hour work week will be $15.47.
Responsibilities:
- The audience intern will work with the Free Press’ digital desk on multiple platforms to create experiences for readers to engage with Free Press content.
- The date intern will work with the Free Press digital desk and data reporter translate high-interest data into digital, print and social stories that drive audience.
- Both positions will experiment with different ways to communicate information.
- At times, report and write breaking and trending news.
- Work together with our award-winning team of journalists, from reporters to editors to photographers, video and audio producers and web editors, to deliver the best news report in Detroit and Michigan.
- Use analytics, Google Trends and other tools to track story performance, identify trending topics and evaluate ways to grow readership.
Requirements:
- Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Reddit.
- Strong communication skills, news judgement and headline-writing ability.
- Ability to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure.
- Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently.
- Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.
- Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check, drug screen & motor vehicle record check.
