At Appen Media Group we are always looking to add experienced freelance journalists to our pool of newsroom talent to contribute pieces to our wide variety of print and digital news products. We most value writers who can meet our deadlines, contribute high quality content that needs minimal editing, and are receptive to story leads we pitch to cover – and to pitching us story ideas!
Here are some examples of possible coverage areas:
1) City and county government. We cover government news for the cities of Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, Milton, Cumming, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody and Fulton, Forsyth and DeKalb counties. We also cover the school board for three counties noted above as well. Covering government typically means (in the COVID era) live streaming the meeting and writing a 400-500 words summary. It can then involve follow up on your part to get explanatory or commentary information from government officials, elected representatives or material experts. Any graphics that would be beneficial to the reader, including photos, graphs, excel documents (typically for budgets) is needed as well.
2) Features/Event coverage. This can be just about anything, but as a community newspaper group we love covering local events, accomplishments and contributions of local non-profits and youth, etc. We always keep an eye our for good leads here, but we love to get “story pitches” from our freelancers, too.
3) Sports. We have a full-time sports reporter on staff, so coverage opportunities are usually limited, but there are occasionally opportunities to cover games for one of the 21 public high schools in our coverage area.
4) Business. We are always looking for good business news. This can be building expansions, corporate relocations, new hires, etc. We typically DO NOT cover things like: anniversaries, new menus for restaurants, ribbon cuttings, new products or services.
Pay structure: Generally speaking we have a $75-$100+/article pay scale for freelancers. When we pitch an idea we will let you know in advance what it pays, or if you pitch us an idea – let us know what you are willing to complete the work for, keeping the above scale in mind.
